Rachel Carson was an American marine biologist and writer whose 1962 book Silent Spring documented the devastating environmental effects of pesticides and helped launch the modern environmental movement. Her work led to a nationwide ban on DDT and inspired the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
